***NOTES ABOUT WORKSHOPS***

Guideline for the workshop levels:

  • Intermediate: You should know basic steps and be comfortable executing cross body lead, right-turn, and combinations of simple turn patterns.
  • Advanced: You should know all above and should be comfortable executing combinations of fairly complicated turn patterns.

If you are just getting started...to get the most out of the workshops, remember to practice the basic steps before attending. That way, you can focus on learning the more advanced moves instead of spending all your time relearning the basic steps.

We are brining in these amazing instructors in town to show us exceptional stuff we don't normally see around, not to show us the basic steps.

For those who don't know the basic steps, there are many local studios where you can learn the basic steps and more to prepare for the workshops.

Instructors & Performers

Victor Perez and Burju Hurturk
of Hacha Y Machete Dance Company - Boston, MA

Founded by Burju Hurturk and Victor Perez, Hacha Y Machete (HYM Style) was the first official Massachusetts based professional New York Style “ON 2” Latin dance company.

The company was formed in 1999 by a group of friends with the intent of enriching and educating New England about the New York Style of dancing salsa/mambo through their performances and classes. Under the direction of Burju Hurturk and Victor Perez the group has earned a remarkable reputation both locally and internationally for their innovative choreography, original style, and high caliber of dancers.

Their dedication and passion has earned them spots on some of the world’s most prestigious stages such as the West Coast World Salsa Congress, the New York Salsa Congress, in some of the biggest night clubs in Boston, New York City, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Washington D.C., and along side well known salsa bands such as Sonora Carruseles and El Gran Combo.

Today, Burju and Victor continue to direct their company with the original goals in mind. To enrich, educate, and promote a positive and inspiring environment for all salseros. To share their love and appreciation of the music and dance throughout the communities they reach.

Salsoul Dance Team - Philadelphia, PA (Performance only)

Salsoul was formed in 2006, and has been going strong ever since. Salsoul's members are 18 year old Van Holloway and 19 year old Angie Ruiz, both whom are native Philadelphians. Van and Angie have been on the salsa scene for about 3 years now. They both bring unique elements to the partnership. Van brings the old school salsa, and Angie brings a bit of funk and hip-hop. California, New York, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Washington D.C. are just some of the various places that have felt the power of Salsoul.

As a growing partnership, Van and Angie continue their love for performing, by not limiting their abilites to strictly salsa. They believe that peforming is not only dancing, but adapting to every environment to please every audience. Van and Angie have studied under world-renouned teachers such as Al "Liquid Silver" Espinoza, Ismael Otero, Darlin Garcia, Stacy Lopez, Mark Anthony, and Nelson Flores.

Salsoul has three main beliefs, the preservation of salsa, the enjoyment of the art of dancing, and determination to succeed.

DJs

DJ Sugar Ruiz is a native son of Philadelphia, PA. He has been in the DJ and Entertainment Business for over 39 years. He has shared the stage with some of the greatest Mambo and Salsa Legends, such as Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Joe Cuba, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ray Barretto, Cheo Feliciano and Ismael Miranda. He has also shared moments with new salsa artist such as Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, Frankie Negron and Michael Stuart. He has also played in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio, Canada and California, with some of the Worlds Top DJs. He is considered by his peers A Top Professional whether it’s a Salsa Congress or Social.

DJ Miguel Lebron, a native Philadelphian of Puerto Rican descent, initiated his DJ career as a highly contracted DJ for weddings and private events thirteen years ago. He entertains his listeners and dancers with all types of music genres but his specialty has always been Latin music. To that end, he later focused his career towards the world of Salsa where he has been able to share and keep alive his heritage and passion for Salsa music and dancing.

Miguel has been the main DJ for the past six years at club “Lyrics” located in his hometown of Philadelphia and continues to hold the reigns on Latin Nights. He took another step closer to achieving his intended goal of spreading his love of Salsa by becoming the official resident DJ for World Salsa Competitor Sonya Elmore of La Luna Dance Studio where he introduces Salsa to all cultures from the beginner to the advanced dancers. For the last four years he has been the official DJ for the “Philadelphia Salsa Congress” where he has spread his love of salsa to people from around the world.

In conclusion, Miguel has really done a fabulous job at allowing people of various cultures to enjoy a very special thing, Music. He continues to help these people relax and show off their dancing talent through his use of current and old music mixes.

Baila Duro's house DJs

DJ Israelo has been in the music scene for over 30 years. During the 80's, he hosted the popular Salsa Seduction show on WCSB. During the late 80 and late 90's he worked as a promoter bringing bands such as Bobby Valentin, Gran Combo and Johnny Rivera to the Aragon and Statler ballrooms. He was bought in to the Tri-C Jazz festival to provide consulting to their festivals. There he worked with Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Conjunto Libre, Poncho Sanchez, and others. He started DJing at Club Azteca and has the distinction of being the first DJ to play exclusively Latin music at a night club. His style can be classified as salsa dura modern.

DJ Frankie Flores is our main resident DJ for Baila Duro. Being an avid music enthusiast and collector, his music selection has been a majority of rare and out of print music. He has played throughout the Midwest and has guest DJed on numerous occasions in Tokyo and Osaka. He will be extending his play to NYC and DC within the next few months and plans to bring all that energy back to Cleveland.
